European Mainland Study Visits

An important aspect of the one year programme is the two week visit to mainland Europe to study the main themes covered in the lecture courses:

Listed Buildings
Conservation Areas
Comparative European Policy & Practice
Heritage Site Management
Heritage Tourism
Historic Gardens

Between 1991 and 1999, the EUC programme has concentrated on Northern Europe as this has been the basis of staff and student research work. However, since 1999, the EUC study visit has focussed on urban and building conservation issues in Malta. Also, recent research has analysed conservation practice in Portugal and Spain.

The following is a list of cities, towns and villages studied during study visits to Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Malta:

UK study visits

An important part of the year's programme is a series of study visits to conservation areas, listed buildings, historic gardens, conservation and heritage management agencies throughout Scotland. In each session a variety of visits are undertaken particularly in Terms 1 and 2. These visits and related practical work exercises are designed to illuminate key themes in the lecture course programmes. As part of the european study visit, certain conservation areas in Northern England also are visited.

Work experience placements

To facilitate career choice and research methodology, all students undertake a six week work experience period in Term 3 with a public or private conservation agency in the UK or other EU country.
