Article 4 Direction
- additional powers sought by Local Authority under Article 4 of the General
Development Order (this is the same article in Scotland and England, although the Orders are
different) to control certain classes of permitted development, by introducing the necessity to
obtain planning consent before work can proceed. It is fairly normal for authorities to seek article
4 directions in respect of conservation areas, where permitted development such as minor works
by house owners or work by statutory undertakers such as electricity boards may be damaging
to character. Consent of the Secretary of State is required.
