Bastle
- a defensible farmhouse, ( perhaps from French Bastille) the usual form of which was a vaulted ground floor on a rectangular plan, housing
animals, with living accommodation above,
entered by a forestair. Most common in the borders area, but they may be
more widespread than commonly assumed, simply because they are seldom looked for. Usual
date, 1500-1700.
