Building preservation notice
- a notice served by a local authority in respect of an unlisted
building, perceived as being of architectural or historic interest, the effect of which notice is to
give the building a temporary listed status lasting for six months, during which time the Secretary
of State decides whether or not to confirm the buildings listed status. Designed as an emergency
power, most authorities will not consider serving a BPN without first consulting The Secretary
of State because of the possibility of compensation should it not be confirmed.
