Change of Use
- just as it sounds, a form of planning consent in which the principle of changing
the use of buildings or land is tested. Only minimal information is required, details follow at a later
stage. Consent for change of use is still an option in respect of listed buildings. This can lead to
problems where the implications of granting such a consent is not properly thought through. For
example it may seem reasonable to grant change of use from a large house to a hotel, but at the
detailed stage, the requirements to protect guests in the event of fire, to provide proper ventilation
to kitchens etc may be extremely onerous in terms of the building's character.
