Chinoiserie / Japonoiserie / Japanning
- European interpretation of chinese art. Became very fashionable in the late
eighteenth century, a number of pagodas
were built, but it was a style most evident in internal
decoration.
Similarly, Japonoiserie derived from Japanese motifs. Popular from
the later 1800's, it is particularly associated with Art Noveau.
Japanning is the
use of coloured laquers on imported japanese cabinets, usually black or red, the laquer was derived from plants.
