- someone who contracts to undertake work. Can be an individual, small firm or large organisation. The term implies the posession of a number of skills and the ability to manage a project. A domestic sub contractor is employed directly by the main contractor to undertake work eg plumbing, which he is unable to complete himself. A named sub contractor is one of a number of firms specified in a bill of quantities as someone the main contractor should select to employ from. A nominated sub contractor is one recognised as having particularly relevent and valuable skills which the main contractor must employ.
