Dean of Guild Court

- grew from the merchant's guild to settle trading disputes, within Scotlandís Royal Burghs. The powers of these courts were steadily eroded by jealous town councils until the Police Act of 1862 allowed a wider establishment of such courts, mainly in response to poor housing. Control over building became its main function during the 19th century. They were gradually phased out with emergence of building acts, building warrants and the building control officer. Minutes, and to a lesser extent drawings which seldom date before 1870 are a valuable archive resource.
