Freestone / Liver rock
- a stone in which the
beds are strongly bonded, making it relatively easy to work in
either direction, and durable, suitable for balusters etc.
(The better class of mason who would have worked freestones were probably the original freemasons).
Freestones are
sometimes referred
to as liver rock, which was in fact a general term used to describe the best stone available in a quarry.
