Gibbs surround
- treatment of door or window
surround where blocks of stone
are inserted into
the architrave.
Used by James Gibbs 1682-1754. Born in Aberdeen, Gibbs followed from Wren
as the most influential architect of his day. Influenced by the Baroque,
his most notable buildings
are St Martins-in-theFields in Trafalgar Square, and the Radcliffe Library, Oxford.
