- formed 1984, as Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission, renamed
Historic Scotland in 1990. An Executive Agency within The Scottish Office, (unlike English
Heritage, not a Quango) its basic objectives are to safeguard and promote Scotland's built
heritage on behalf of the Secretary of State. It does this through the statutory consents
system, where it has the final say on consents for changes to category A and B buildings and demolition
of category C’s, by offering financial support, by managing over 300 properties, and by undertaking research
and encouraging the development of appropriate expertise.
