- device for lifting blocks of stone
in which a dovetailed
shaped tennon (a lewis) usually made in three sections is fitted into
a dovetailed recess cut into the block. An eye or hook fitted to one of
the three sections which are screwed together once they have been inserted
into the stone, allows the lewis to be grabbed and the block moved.
