- a mixture traditionally including an aggregate, slacked lime or clay, any appropriate additive and water which is used for pointing and bedding masonry. In modern times, portland cement has been more widely used. A mixture rich in the cementing material is said to be "fat". Plasticisers are introduced into mortars to make them more workable, retarders are used to slow down the setting time.
