- formed in 1791 to undertake the first accurate national topographic survey
of Britain. The work was carried out by The Honourable Board of Ordnance, part of the war
office who were responsible for artillery, and therefore employed engineers - hence the name.
They have provided accurate map coverage since the 1850's, a valuable historic record. They
became an independant civil service department, but were recently privatised.
