Royal Peculiar

- a place of worship which comes under the personal jurisdiction of the Queen, most date back to Anglo-Saxon times when places of worship could owe allegiance directly to the sovereign and were not therefore subject to any form of bishop or archbishop jurisdiction. A list of Royal Peculiars which includes Westminster Abbey, the chapel at Windsor Castle etc. is published annually in the Church of England Handbook. The chapel at the Palace of Holyrood is the only Royal Peculiar in Scotland.
