What happened here... I don't know, mid august and hundereds of dead hoverflies... didn't seem to be poison.. plenty of beetles etc were still foraging the same (happily flowering) plants, but the area was smothered in swollen serphids... weird...

the update on this is that it isn't exclusively an autumn phenomenon.... these were in june... the plants covered in other insect life... not quite so many (or as weathered - my guess on the swelling) but still a fair number... do they just like to sit together when they wear out??
